Mountains and the Mind 2 – Into the Death Zone
Tuesday 29th April 2025

Al came to talk at The Brisley Bell last year about his adventures in Nepal and we absolutely loved hearing these. He’s been back to Nepal again to climb a mountain called Manaslu, which is the 8th highest mountain in the world. So, we’ve invited back to pub to hear more about this amazing trip…. It’ll be a similar format 40 talk, 20 minutes Q&A.

A Norfolk boy and a resident of Brisley, Al leads a life as a barrister between London and Norfolk. Alongside his legal pursuits, Al has a deep love for travel and the mountains, which has provided a source of inspiration and personal growth.
As an enthusiastic traveller and amateur mountaineer, Al embarks on adventures whenever time permits, relishing the opportunity to explore the peaks that grace the world, particularly the Himalayas. Although his mountaineering endeavours are pursued on a part-time basis, each journey holds a special place in his heart, fuelling a deep sense of wonder and gratitude for the natural world.
Following his ascent of Ama Dablam in 2022, Al embarked in 2024 on an expedition to climb his first 8,000-meter mountain, Manaslu, the world’s 8th highest mountain. This was a journey that would take him for the first time into the fabled ‘death-zone’ only to be found on the world’s highest mountains.
This was a journey marked not only by physical exertion but also the lessons learned along the way, not least the indomitable spirit that resides within every individual, waiting to be awakened through the embrace of great challenge.
In sharing the story of his fascination with mountains and his trip to Manaslu, Al hopes to convey the message that ordinary people can embrace extraordinary pursuits, finding solace, growth and joy amidst the grandeur of nature.
In his talk, Al will share the story of his adventure, the awe-inspiring beauty and spiritual power of the mountains and the transformative power of nature. Through his experiences, he hopes to foster a sense of humility and inspire others to pursue their own passions.
When not exploring the mountains or standing up in court, Al loves all things Norfolk, despite it being about as far from the Himalayas as it is possible to be!
